The “Big Picture”
Losing weight at the gym is about more than watching calories tick up on cardio equipment. To really get fit (and therefore lean), you need to get stronger too, which will increase your metabolic base and also increase the amount of calories you can burn in a single period of time. Tour de France athletes can burn upwards of 10,000 calories a day when on the tour, an amazing feat. They can burn this many because they’ve built their strength up, and can work harder for a given unit of time than you or I can. We might never be Tour de France athletes, but what we can do is increase our base, one step at a time, until we reach the weight, fitness level, and strength we’re pleased with.
